I have owned a cat for 7 years. That has given me plenty of time to experiment with different cat litter and to decide what works best for my lifestyle and my cat. On the quest to find the best rated cat litter, I have learned many things. The most important is that the best rated cat litter depends completely on you. What litter best fits what you are looking for, with the most benefits, and the least amount of drawbacks? Finding the litter for your cat doesn’t have to be rocket science, even though there is a multitude of options out there from low prices to very high. One brand you see everywhere is Arm & Hammer. When is there a time and a place for Arm & Hammer cat litter?

If you have a tight budget and are looking for a decent product that gets the cat litter job done, then Arm & Hammer will be the best rated cat litter for you. As well, you might have a budget that’s just fine but you have a lot of cats! You still need affordable cat litter! In this case, also, Arm & Hammar will work for you.
If your budget is tight, or you simply don’t want to spend your extra money on cat litter, then you don’t need to worry about the more expensive, fancy litters with all the frills and ribbons, bells, and whistles. But, first, know what your budget is.
To find out what your budget is, count your cats, and multiply this by the pound that they need per month.
For example, see below:
Please know that these are approximate measurements! Once you get to know your cat’s habits, you will be able to adjust this more precisely. Some cats make a mess of the litter, some cats like really deep litter, and some cat litters you need less or more of depending on the type.
For the next part, you may need to mix and match. Do you have 2 small cats? 1 small cat and 1 big cat? Add those totals together.
As an illustration, one big cat and one small cat would use approximately 40lbs + 28lbs= 68lbs per month. As you can see, actually taking the time to sit down and calculate your litter costs may answer your cat litter questions for you. Do you have 3 large cats? That’s 120lbs per month and 1440lbs per year. Multiply the poundage by a ‘fancy’ cat litter price and a ‘standard’ cat litter price and note the difference. I’m sure you will quickly see what you can afford, and what you can’t.

There are pros and cons to almost every cat litter. If you find one that is perfect, do let me know. Whatever litter you chose, keep in mind that sometimes pros or cons have a pricetag.
Do you find yourself sweeping constantly because your brand of litter drags everywhere across the floor? Are you very busy- studying for college, working a full-time job, raising a family, trying to have a social life- and you find yourself going mental when you look at the state of your floors- needing to be swept twice a day? That could be 20 min of your time every day used elsewhere. For a busy person, what price tag would you put on 20 extra minutes a day, over 2 hours per week? What would you give to have 2 hours per week where you could just take a break, or do what you love, or spend time with your kid?
I have been there before. That time can be priceless. In this case, there can be a hidden cost. If your cat litter is driving you nuts literally, then maybe an extra couple bucks per month or year even becomes a reasonable price for sanity.
This is of course and example. There are probably hundreds of different factors to consider for pros and cons, and I won’t bore you with those here. It’s a good principle to keep in mind that these things that are hidden can add up. Just something to be aware of, when finding the litter for you and your cat’s season of life.

This is a basic cat litter that you will find at most grocery stores in their pet aisle. Some pet stores that are more local or upscale will not have it, since it is not fancy enough for their place, so to speak.
Arm & Hammer will do the job. It is going to give you reasonable odor control if that is the kind you buy, if you get clumping it will clump, and it will be relatively dust-free. It will be affordable per lb or kg. It is not the best on the environment in terms of disposal, but let’s be honest. You will pay a lot extra for enivronmental stars of the cat litter world. As much as I love and try to take care of the environment, it’s still reasonable to know that it will be more expensive when it comes to buying kitty litter. At least for the time being.
You can pick Arm & Hammer up easily with your groceries from the pet food aisle, which can actually save you some money (a trip to the pet store, the time that takes, and the money for gas).

It is also readily available online. If you have a disability, are sick, or are worried about going to the grocery store due to Covid, it is actually really convenient to just order it through Amazon. I have recently been ordering more through Amazon since I am at a busy time in my life, and this saves me a trip out myself or a Saturday morning of errands. I can use this time for other things.
Of course, you’ll have to plan ahead a bit. If you suddenly run out, unless you get one-day or two-day shipping, you may not be able to get the litter to your place before your cat needs to go to the bathroom next. Most of the time planning ahead in this way is completely doable. When I shop online for litter, I usually just plan to have one always in stock around my place, so that I don’t get stuck in an emergency situation where I can’t order online.
Another plus of Arm & Hammer is that you can get all sorts of kinds. If you want one that is especially for the elimination of odor, you can get that!
And, unlike the specialty brands of litter, which some cats don’t like, your cat will likely have no problem adjusting to this kind of litter at all.

If you have a tight or moderately tight budget, you may not be able to afford the fancy kitty litters. You can choose to budget for one of these if that is what you want. There is nothing wrong with that at all. Personally, as I can afford it, I upgrade my litter.
But if you are in a place in life where you need a good quality litter that will do it’s job, then you will not go wrong with a basic Arm & Hammer variety.
Just remember to keep in mind what each positive and negative is worth to you, and fit that into your budget.
The litter pounds can really add up for a while, so don’t let the cost hit you out of nowhere!

Let us know what your thoughts are on cat litter below!
This is such an amazingly informative post. I have had a cat, a siamese one, she was the most astonishing brilliant intelligent mind I have ever seen. She did follow me and watch me and eventually I didn’t need to get a litter or water ball as she went by herself to the toilet and to the sink to drink water. Blew my mind away! I have heard from friends that they have cat litter and struggle with finding a proper sand for. I like how you’ve exemplified/described everything for the wellbeing of our family furry member and mostly for us. Thank you for sharing this.
Hi there! No problem 🙂 That is amazing that your Siamese cat is toilet trained!! I have heard that some cats can do that. My brother and sister-in-law bought a toilet training kit for their cat, and he was able to catch on, too. It sounds like your cat is brilliant! All the best to you and your Siamese friend 🙂
